**Special announcement**

Donations for Forest Voices

Who is Forest Voices? An organisation that provides tools and training for sensitive forest and agriculture communities to document knowledge and management using photography, video, and participatory methods. This gives communities a voice to create a future that reconciles differences and maintains hope and health that keeps forests, farms and communities thriving.

The camera Donations...

The donated cameras from the public will go to the forest communities to document changes of the forest, land use, and issues of direct concern to them. In the world of conservation, documenting this kind of local knowledge is key to sustaining healthy forests for generations and establishing dialogue. What is more exciting is when people’s ideas can lead to direct projects based on people’s own thoughts and questions. In addition to using these images to create books and a more nuanced understanding of forest communities, Forest Voices also use these images to apply for grants that directly benefit local people. Within the next year, some potential projects include a tree nursery training, forest tree seed sharing networks and mediation training and learning exercises.

Camera Donations for Forest Voices

Camera donations can help forest communities to document changes of the forest, land use, and issues of direct concern to them. In the world of conservation, documenting this kind of local knowledge is key to sustaining healthy forests for generations and establishing dialogue. What is more exciting is when people’s ideas can lead to direct projects based on people’s own thoughts and questions. In addition to using these images to create books and a more nuanced understanding of forest communities, I use these images to apply for grants that directly benefit local people. Within the next year, some potential projects include a tree nursery training, forest tree seed sharing networks and mediation training and learning exercises.

What kind of equipment is useful? Forest Voices is accepting digital point and shoot and DSLR cameras for donation. Cameras need to be in good working order. Aside from that, standard compact flash card or SD cards also make a wonderful donation. Cameras that accept regular AA or 3 volt batteries are preferred.

How to donate? You can drop off your old but still good cameras at the No Plastic Bazaar on 31 August and upon receipt of the camera, you’ll receive a tax deductible donation receipt.

You will be helping out a good cause to document Malaysia’s fast disappearing forest knowledge!

Responses to the plea..

updated again on April 13*

Many responded to Janet's mass mail with very inspiring stories and ideas...here are some of them:

"Thanks for making this initiative!
I have been doing similar things for some time, starting before there were campaigns and only the Body Shop knew what I was doing. In the beginning I had to repeat myself a few times before the cashier or storekeeper understood that no, for some strange reason i do not want that - yes, that - plastic bag. used to bring around a plastic bag in my handbag or a paper bag, but now that there is more awareness. there is a spare plastic bag in my handbag but nowadays i no longer forget to bring enough bags. :)

we sent some clothes for dry cleaning - my parents' send some officewear to the laundry regularly. i figured out that the plastic cover the clothes come back in makes a better trash bag than the black bags they sell in the shop. so what if the bag is transparent? just seal the top where the hanger comes out and use it as bin liners. cut to size if you like. from then on, i need not send the plastic for recycling and can now use the reuseable bags even for grocery shopping. use the waterproof or machine-washeable cloth ones for the meat stuff. between composting, recycling, re-using, repairing instead of replacing, and generally not buying unnecessary things, our garbage output is down to one garbage bag a week. it's very doable with not a lot of effort at all. even so we still get a lot of unnecessary corporate gifts and also wedding trinkets - freecyclers, when planning your wedding please consider making your door gift (and its packaging) something that is recyled, recyclable, edible, and/or compostible, compactly packed so as not to require a paper/cloth/plastic bag as a secondary packaging. your friends and parents' friends love you and wish you well, but will probably not keep plastic flowers, fridge magnets, ceramic trinkets and stuff like that. why not go gentle on the Earth, choose less impactful gifts, and if you save money too put it into your honeymoon fund. :)

Jusco is very good - their cashiers get it; when the customer has a few empty bags on the trolley it means she intends for them to be used to pack the groceries. I think that Carrefour, even though they have signs and sell reuseable bags, are not very serious about it as their cashiers don't quite understand that we don't want the plastic. and their security guards tagged closed our reuseable bag before he would allow us in even though all the bags are empty, so we could not use the biggest bag and had to take out all the smaller bags. Since Jusco Taman Ekuin also has free range eggs (telur ayam kampung), which we have switched to for ethical reasons, we've mostly not gone to Carrefour anymore.

I was very glad when my office decided to stop stocking paper cups in the pantry, let the staff know why. We will all get mugs instead. And the water dispenser and coffee machine has a timer so that at night the machines do not keep the water heated. Maybe if anyone wants to suggest this for their offices?
but i had not thought of carrying utensils - thanks for bringing that up Janet. it's a great idea."
Nuraini Arsad, KL

"I applaud your most laudable effort. I've been going plastic-bagless for a few years without really trying. I carry recycled cloth bags or backpack when I shop. I remember fondly the rattan-bamboo basket I used when I was a kid in Taiping: fish were wrapped in leaves and tied with a straw, vegetables just dropped straight in the basket, for anything liquid or soggy I brought my own bottles or tins.  Now I get a ten-cent rebate for each bag I bring for my grocery, and nearby San Francisco has passed an ordinance to tax plastic bags and ban all plastic bags in supermarkets.

It isn't a difficult habit to break, just like we got rid of all uses of Styrofoam containers for fast foods here.  I walk or bike to do my grocery shopping. If I find stray plastic bags I take them back to the store to deposit in the plastic bagrecycling bin. On more concerted effort, I organize and participate in environmental clean-up days to rid roadsides, parks and streams of plastic and other trash. Yes, we can do it a bag at a time, and thank you for starting with your first in malaysia!"

Cheers,
Star California

"Way to go Janet.

Some years ago an Australian friend gave me a kind of strong silk bag. It's very common in Australia now as an alternative to plastic. I keep it in my handbag because it folds up soooo small and I use it when I need instead of plastic to carry stuff. They are so good. I've had mine for 4 years already. When it gets grubby I just wash it.

Thanks for all your good reminders.

take care."

"Hi Janet,

Well Done girl!  Noble and do-able. Can you include the MNS Green Living. They also have a long list of very simple and do-able things. And of course, links to search engines like Blackle, Coldblack, etc. Did you know that two full powere Google searches on the white screen will generate enough energy to boil a kettle of water? Scary, huh.

Keep it going Janet."

"What a wonderful email, Janet! Thanks for sharing this..

You’re right, there are many little things we could all be doing and it’s a question of remembering and making an active effort.

Some things which i do:

-          Saving and recycling plastic bottles (outside TMC every Saturday)

-          When i have stuff to dump e.g. old printers, sofa, fridges, i phone for a charity to come to collect it (or i deliver it to them) – if it’s in good condition, they reuse it, otherwise, it’s recycled

-          We’re vegetarian on most days (meat has a much bigger carbon footprint than vegetables) and i’m trying to grow my own vegetable patch (reducing transport, etc)

-          Try to buy local stuff as much as possible (small carbon footprint than moving goods halfway around the world)

-          I don’t sleep in air cond.

There are some stuff which i haven’t worked out yet e.g. flying, cars and of course, make-up J

But your idea about taking water around and utensils is really clever, must remember to do that!

Thanks, Janet... keep up the good wishes and great work."

"Well done Janet!

I must say that I thought I was pretty good at using my own shopping bags, switching off lights and water and I too have a platypus!  But I must say I’m impressed by your using your own Tupperware when getting take away!  Pure dedication!

Will sign that list asap.

Hope you are well."

The Recyclist: my plea to all...

Volunteer Janet made her pleade to her entire email address book via a mass email :)

** ** ** ** ** **
Dear friends, families, clients & colleagues,

Howdy :)

I am soliciting something to you thro this mass email (apologies) but No, there won't be any money involved in this solicitation so hold on to your wallets :)  nor there is a political propaganda so hold your tongue ;p

Am sure many of you have noticed that I carry with me a funny (or scary to some) looking drinking bag with me wherever I go, it's a FDA (US Food & Drug Association) approved imported plastic bag for holding drinking liquids call Platypus.  I have been using that drinking bag for more than a year now, and before I purchased that bag, I was carrying around large drinking bottle to keep myself hydrated.

I have chosen a lifestyle of having my own drinking bottle/bag around because I want to reduce my personal consumption of plastic products (bottled mineral water for a start).  I also always carry in my various huge handbags a set of reusable utensil so I don't need to use another plastic spoon or fork at food courts or take out counters.  In my handbag on most days, I have with me a foldable shopping bag so I don't have to take a plastic bag to hold my purchases over the cashiers.

Am sure all of you would have at some point have heard of all the busy talk about saving the earth, protect the planet, our environment, global warming, etc etc.  I live a very busy schedule and am sure most of you do too, although I wish I have more resources and time to organise green movement on a grander scale, I figure at this rate, I will just do what I can manage at this point by doing my little part thro my everyday routine and small bits -- things everybody can do with just a little bit effort -- you know we cannot pretend that going green is ever easy but doing a small bit ISN'T HARD.

So I do my small bits in

- the few things I've already mentioned above, carry my own drinking water around, have my own shopping bag handy, use my own compact utensils.
- turning off lights when I leave a room
- switch off the air con when I don't need it
- turn off the tap when I'm brushing my teeth
- pack my take-out in my own Tupperware
- turn off my PC screen when I go out
- shop second hand :)  cheap n good

Ok, that's enough granny story to illustrate my point quite simply?  I heard this the other day over the radio just before the Earth Hour event, a guy from an NGO saying to the radio show host - "Frankly, the planet earth doesn't need any saving, the earth will heal itself if it is rid of modernisation& over-harvesting.  Really, it is us, the human beings that need to be saved, from our destructive ways -- at this rate we are going, we will extinct pretty soon if we don't slow down -- so really, what we are doing in our green movement is to save ourselves from being swallowed in our own mess."

So I urge you, if you aren't already (I know some of you are already doing it) thinking about saving ourselves, please spend a few moments to ponder over.  There is a bottomless  amount of facts, reports and statistics about global warming, exhausting natural resources, etc etc...everywhere we look so I shan't attempt to paint the picture to you here, the picture isn't a pretty one but there is no reason to give up.

Now, specifically, I am urging all of us to REDUCE (not stop, just reduce) our consumption of Disposable plastic products, Styrofoam...you know what I mean.

I volunteer with a group set up by a few friends name The Recyclist, we have a grand project called the Project Daily Million -- we aim to collect one million Malaysian signatures, of people who are consciously thinking about saving and reducing the use of plastic bags (and sorts) AND do save a plastic bag a day -- hence, a million bags saved on daily basis: Project Daily Million.

Now, last but not least, if you agree to my notions above, please spend a minute by signing your name on The Reccylist & Project Daily Million site at:

(please note that this site is still being updated as we speak so please ignore the out-dated pledgers list, we have more than 105 pledgers today)

Details on our (The Recyclist) mission and objectives is on the site, http://projectdailymillion.com
please help yourself, we welcome feedback & ideas.  Do check the site again in a week's time for our new look and updates.

Thank you for reading and for your  time :)

Have a green day ahead...

cheers

In the media - Liuligongfang launches`The Hopeful Pendant' to raise fund for The Recyclists - Nanyang Siang Pau, May 1, 2008

A meaningful meeting with Liuligongfang founders Loretta Yang and Chang Yi at their Malaysian outlet in Pavilion in late April to discuss our plan to work together on animal welfare. Journalist from Nanyang Siang Pau was present to report.

The write-up was published on May 1, 2008 - click on image to read the article
(correction - The `Hopeful' pendant is priced at RM 220 per piece, not RM 22 per piece)

Some of us from the committee were present (TP Lim, Peter Ong and Janet Lee), together with Independent Pet Rescuer volunteer cum animal welfare worker, Nicole Ann Thomas, we shared our inspirations with Loretta & Chang, on building social awareness & infrastructure in caring for stray animals & pets. To aid The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and Independent Pet Rescuer (IPR), The Recyclists are working closely with Yayasan Nanyang Foundation.

We attended the launch of Liligongfang exhibition opening at Pavilion on May 2, where it also marked the beginning of the sale of 1, 500 pieces of specially designed `Hopeful Heart' pendants by Loretta Yang. Half of the sale proceeds will be contributed to The Recyclists projects.

Earth Day - April 22

Happy belated Earth Day!

Maybe we can consider everyday to be Earth Day, at the rate we leave our carbon footprint in these day and age of fast living. Things we take for granted, ought to be taken into consideration. There are endless ways to help, if you have not started thinking or doing anything yet, read these articles (in links below) and see how little you can do everyday to help make a big difference...

Two lists of to-do for your reference -

Going Green - Ten Things You Can Do This Earth Day

How To Take Action To Reduce Global Warming

There are many many websites and features on the topic but we start with these two for now...

Happy helping...we help ourselves save this place for ourselves, and for our future.
